For any F&B brand operating here, Halal certification is not a box-ticking exercise. It is a fundamental expression of respect for the market, a legal obligation, and a cornerstone of consumer trust.

Under Indonesia’s Halal Product Assurance Law (UU No. 33 Tahun 2014) and its implementing regulations, F&B businesses are required to obtain Halal certification from the Badan Penyelenggara Jaminan Produk Halal (BPJPH). The process involves ingredient verification, facility audits, documentation review, and formal approval by the relevant Lembaga Pemeriksa Halal (LPH). Getting it right requires both technical knowledge and close coordination with regulatory authorities.

For ZUS Coffee, a brand built on the promise of quality and accessibility, earning the Halal mark is an essential step in demonstrating their genuine commitment to their Indonesian customers.

About ZUS Coffee

ZUS Coffee is one of Southeast Asia’s most recognisable specialty coffee brands. Founded in Malaysia with the vision of making specialty coffee accessible to everyone, captured in their tagline “Specialty Coffee for All”, the brand has expanded to over 1,000 outlets internationally, driven by a loyal community of fans known as Zuristas.

In 2026, ZUS Coffee took a significant step forward by opening their first physical store in Indonesia at Puri Indah, Jakarta, marking the beginning of what promises to be an exciting chapter in the brand’s regional growth story.

The Challenges: Three Real Hurdles for an International Brand

ZUS Coffee’s Halal certification journey in Indonesia came with a set of specific, practical challenges that required more than just regulatory knowledge. They required adaptability, deep local expertise, and genuine problem-solving on the ground.

1. Imported Raw Materials

As a brand with an established supply chain built outside Indonesia, ZUS Coffee sources a number of its raw materials from overseas. Under Indonesian Halal regulations, every ingredient used in a certified product must be traceable and verifiable, regardless of its country of origin. This means imported materials must be supported by valid documentation, including certificates of origin, supplier Halal credentials, and in some cases additional scrutiny from the LPH auditors.

Managing this documentation chain across multiple countries and suppliers, while aligning it to the specific requirements of BPJPH, required meticulous coordination and a thorough understanding of both the regulatory expectations in Indonesia and the realities of international sourcing.

2. Different Understanding of Halal Compliance

Halal compliance is not a single universal standard. Different markets interpret and apply Halal requirements differently, and what is considered sufficient in one country may not meet the threshold in another. ZUS Coffee, having operated primarily in Malaysia and other markets, came with an existing understanding of Halal that did not map exactly to the Indonesian framework administered by BPJPH.

Bridging this gap required PRI to invest time in educating and aligning the ZUS Coffee team on Indonesia-specific Halal requirements, from the scope of documentation needed to the way audits are conducted and evaluated. This alignment was a critical step in ensuring the certification process proceeded without unnecessary delays or revision cycles caused by mismatched expectations.

3. Bridging Two Different Collaboration Platforms

A less obvious but genuinely impactful challenge was the difference in the collaboration tools each party preferred. BPJPH and PRI operate within a Google Workspace environment, which supports seamless document sharing, real-time editing, and structured communication between regulatory stakeholders. ZUS Coffee, on the other hand, uses a third-party collaboration platform for their internal team workflows.

Rather than forcing either party to adopt an unfamiliar system, PRI developed an innovative bridging method that allowed both platforms to function in parallel. Documents, approvals, and communications were structured so that information flowed smoothly between the two environments without duplication, confusion, or version control issues. This behind-the-scenes operational solution may not be the most visible part of the engagement, but it had a direct impact on the efficiency and quality of the collaboration throughout the certification process.

Taken together, these three challenges reflect the kind of complexity that any international brand can expect when entering the Indonesian Halal certification process for the first time. ZUS Coffee needed a partner who could handle not just the regulatory mechanics, but also the human and operational dimensions of the journey. That is precisely what PRI is here for.

What PRI Is Doing: An Active Engagement

Product Registration Indonesia has taken on the full Halal registration mandate for ZUS Coffee Indonesia. The process is actively underway, and on 22 June 2026, our team reached a significant milestone: the successful completion of the first Halal internal audit, also known as a gap analysis. This is a foundational step in the certification process, assessing the current state of compliance across ingredients, processes, and documentation against the requirements set by BPJPH, and identifying any areas that need to be addressed before formal certification can proceed.

Our work includes:

Pre-assessment of product ingredients and formulations against applicable Halal standards

Preparation and submission of documentation to BPJPH

Coordination with the appointed Lembaga Pemeriksa Halal (LPH) for product audits and inspections

Active monitoring and follow-up throughout the review and evaluation process

Ongoing compliance advisory to support the team as the process progresses

Our team’s deep familiarity with BPJPH processes and our experience working with F&B brands across a wide range of product categories allows us to anticipate potential bottlenecks before they become delays. The completion of the gap analysis on 22 June 2026 marks the first formal milestone cleared, and the process continues to move forward with clarity and momentum.

Part of a Larger Effort: Collaboration with Business Hub Asia

PRI’s Halal engagement is part of a broader, coordinated support effort within the MMW Strategic Group. Our sister company, Business Hub Asia (BHA), is simultaneously managing ZUS Coffee’s payroll and BPJS, accounting and tax, and legal advisory needs. This integrated approach means ZUS Coffee can rely on a single, coherent group of advisors to handle the full spectrum of their market entry requirements.

With BHA owning back-office operations and PRI owning regulatory compliance, the two workstreams run in parallel, each reinforcing the other. This is a model we are proud of, and one that reflects our group’s commitment to being a genuine, full-service partner for international brands entering Indonesia.

A Journey We Are Proud to Be Part Of

ZUS Coffee’s first Indonesian store is already serving customers in Puri Indah, Jakarta. On 22 June 2026, PRI completed the first Halal internal audit (gap analysis) for ZUS Coffee Indonesia, a meaningful step forward in the certification journey. Every milestone cleared brings the brand closer to giving Indonesian consumers the full assurance they deserve in the products they choose.

For Product Registration Indonesia, being trusted to support an iconic regional brand through this process is something we do not take lightly. We are grateful for the partnership, and we are committed to seeing it through to a successful certification outcome.

Bringing Your F&B Brand to Indonesia?

印度尼西亚产品注册 helps domestic and international F&B brands navigate Indonesia’s regulatory landscape with confidence.
